Job Description

Responsible for the development, implementation and administration of global trade compliance policies and programs.  Develop and implement an ongoing trade compliance program that drives accountability at all Stryker locations for compliance with import requirements, export controls, and sanctions regulations.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directly manage the global trade legal and compliance team.

  • Oversee the strategic design, development, and implementation of a corporate global trade compliance program.

  • Communicate policies to senior leaders and key stakeholders across the organization.

  • Support and act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership with regard to the myriad of regulations that govern the international movement of goods, software, and technology, specifically import requirements, export controls, and sanctions compliance.

  • Provide strategic input on program and process modifications and enhancements to reflect evolving and complex legal requirements, clarifications, or updates in applicable trade laws, regulations, policy, and business strategy.

  • Provide daily guidance to commercial and operational teams to ensure alignment and compliance with complex trade laws and regulations.

  • Support relevant stakeholders with import and export classification and licensing of products, software, technology, and services according to export controls and sanctions regulations.

  • Support global screening activities against restricted party lists to ensure compliance with global sanctions and OFAC’s 50% rule.

  • Maintain broad based knowledge of the organization and use that knowledge to develop and maintain meaningful metrics on the performance of the compliance program against strategy and goals of the program. 

  • Establish and administer a corporate-wide training program on trade compliance and foster general awareness of trade compliance requirements throughout the organization.

  • Develop and coordinate internal and external audits to ensure transactional compliance with established procedures, assess risk areas, and address and escalate gaps to mitigate corporate risk. 

  • Establish standards for recordkeeping related to exports, licenses, and other trade compliance activities.

  • Manage expedient resolution of any government related inquiries, requests for information, audits, and disclosures involving customs, export controls, and sanctions compliance. 

  • Establish and implement corporate-wide and regional processes to ensure all expectations, requirements, and best practices are communicated continuously, clearly, and regularly socialized to leadership and relevant stakeholders globally.

  • Initiate and oversee projects and controls that will drive further compliance with trade laws and regulations and mitigate risk globally.

 

Qualifications & Work Experience Required

  • 10+ years relevant work experience in trade compliance

  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in export controls and sanctions, including the EAR (ECCNs; License Exceptions TSR, RPL, TSU, ENC, and CCD), OFAC sanctions programs, EU restrictive measures, and restricted party lists (SDN List and the Entity List among others)

  • Proven ability within trade regulations, logistics, operations, and project management

  • Experience with Trade Management Systems and restricted party screening

  • Experience in medical device industry or comparable industry a plus

  • Experience in export licensing strongly preferred

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint experience strongly preferred

  • Strong industry knowledge across multiple countries

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective relationships around the region / world

  • Proven ability to negotiate effective solutions

  • Strategic planning, problem solving and tactical implementation skills

  • Effective leadership, team building, mentoring, and oral/written communication skills

  • Ability to deal with decentralized teammates and influence across a regional team

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects to short deadlines

 

Education & Special Training Required

  • JD (required) + Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experienced and skilled in working with MS Office

  • Fluency in the English language a must (spoken and written)

  • Fluency in languages a plus (spoken and written)

 

Compensation

  • $167,300 - $369,700 salary plus bonus eligible + generally eligible for short-term and long-term financial incentives + benefits.  Actual minimum and maximum may vary based on location.  Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
