PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Exelon is seeking a highly experienced health and safety attorney to handle complex legal matters, incidents and projects. The attorney must possess the ability to work under minimal supervision on major matter, team or client responsibilities on issues of significant importance to the Company. Demonstrates innovation; generates new ideas and devises original and successful solutions, programs or actions.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Performs as a specialist in Health & Safety law, providing technical and expert legal services to Exelon Business Units
  • Under minimal supervision, plans, conducts and supervises complex legal assignments, requiring an ability to evaluate matters that may have a major bearing on conducting the Company’s business; evaluates legal and business risks and advises clients accordingly
  • Interprets and applies organization policy according to law
  • Represents Exelon in agency proceedings, inspections and/or relevant litigation
  • Manages outside counsel retained to work on significant legal matters and litigation
  • Prepares, and revises as necessary, budgets and early matter assessments for outside counsel
  • Other projects / duties as assigned


JOB SCOPE

  • Supports more senior attorneys in the ongoing management of relationships and matters at the corporate level and within Exelon Operating Companies/Business Units.
  • Demonstrates superior legal judgment in the business context.
  • Demonstrates innovation; generates new ideas and devises original and successful solutions, programs or actions.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An LLB or JD from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in the relevant jurisdictions. A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in Health & Safety law.  Ability to provide support for accidents, injuries and industrial hygiene / illness events, post-incident investigations, and OSHA inspections, citations and litigation with minimal outside counsel support.  Possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the legal field to the completion of complex assignments. Requires excellent legal research, analytical abilities and on ongoing knowledge of applicable regulations. Must have the ability to communicate clearly – both orally and in writing; to read and analyze legal materials and other data; to work in stressful conditions under time deadlines.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as in-house counsel or working with in-house counsel
  • experience with MSHA
  • experience with the electric generation and energy delivery industries
  • Experience with safety in workplaces with union-represented employees
