This position is located in the Office of General Counsel.

Under the general supervision of the General Counsel, the Senior Paralegal performs advanced legal research, document drafting and supports the delivery of quality legal services to the South Carolina Department of Insurance. This position reports to the General Counsel but also works under the direction of counsel on assigned matters.

The Senior Paralegal researches and analyzes law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treatises, constitutions, and legal codes. Assists and supports attorneys with research or due diligence reviews and internal investigations and other reviews.

The Essential Functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performs legal and factual research as assigned on a variety of insurance regulatory and other topics; reviews publications and performs database research; drafts legal memoranda and other documents or pleadings based on that research; prepares subpoenas and motions and conducts legal research relating to pleading and motion practice; analyzes records, documents, and facts gathered in preparation for depositions, arbitrations, trials and administrative hearings.

Manages and coordinates the Records Management and Retention process for the Office of General Counsel and updates Office databases including HIGHQ and the Privacy, Ethics and Office of General Counsel SharePoint sites; the forms as well as the contracts and document repositories for the Office of General Counsel; assists with general updates and the updates to the templates posted on these sites for use by OGC staff; updates desk procedures, investigation guidelines and office manuals in the official repository where these documents are stored as approved and directed by the General Counsel.

Assists the General Counsel with privacy impact assessments and training on data security and privacy topics; internal training on insurance regulatory topics for OGC staff and other business units on the legal aspects of their job responsibilities by performing tasks such as drafting, reviewing and editing power point presentations; handling the logistics associated with the training including setting up the site and recordkeeping.

Assists counsel in all phases of litigation including creating and overseeing trial exhibits, preparing motions, interrogatories and pre-trial briefs; reviewing and summarizing depositions and court opinions.

Reviews, analyzes and tracks current developments, literature and technical resources in the legal field and insurance regulation; maintains familiarity with applicable laws, regulations, and policies affecting the legal department; prepares or assist with the preparation of summaries concerning pending cases to be provided to the General Counsel for risk management purposes.

Handles special projects and performs other related duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Minimum requirements are a high school diploma and paralegal experience performing delegated, substantive legal work.

Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and a minimum of four (4) years of legal experience in a corporation, law firm, or litigation services industry.

Must have strong communication skills and uphold strict confidentiality and privacy.

Strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment; ability to coordinate multiple tasks concurrently.

Analytical thinker with detailed research proficiencies.

Ability to grasp and interpret legal documents and concepts.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe.

Familiarity with document management systems.

Good judgment and ability to prioritize tasks.

Ability to interact professionally and effectively

Significant substantive knowledge of the procedures, terminology and documents relating to corporate matters; high degree of specialization in areas of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.

Minimum of four (4) years of legal experience in a corporation, law firm, or litigation services industry.
