Summary:   The Knowledge Management Artificial Intelligence Lawyer (“KM AI Lawyer”) will play a critical role in supporting Sidley’s Generative AI strategy for the Global Practice Groups (“GPG”). The KM AI Lawyer will support the development, vetting and rigorous testing of AI capabilities across a number of legal technologies. The KM AI Lawyer will work extensively with KM Leadership and KM Lawyers embedded within the GPGs, at all stages in the review of Generative AI, from initial exploration to testing and implementation. 

The KM AI Lawyer will be a centralized resource assisting the GPGs and Practice Area Teams (“PATs”) in exploring use cases for Generative AI and legal technologies to address pain points and improve workflows. The KM AI Lawyer will focus on the identification and collection of compelling use cases, prompts and testing materials, and assist in developing Generative AI training, resource materials and other knowledge-based projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Depending on how the needs of the practices evolve, the duties and responsibilities of the KM AI Lawyer may include, but not be limited to: 

Validation of Use Cases and Prompt Engineering

  • Work closely with KM Leadership and the KM Lawyers to develop and track use cases and prompts across a number of Generative AI legal technologies. 
  • Collaborate with the KM Lawyers in refining prompts to improve outputs and in evaluating use cases across practice groups.
  • Develop, define and implement procedures for consistent review and dissemination of use cases and prompts.
  • Communicate regularly with the KM Lawyers and Specialists at the firm to share best practices.
  • Draft and collect thought leadership materials and presentations on Generative AI, including training materials, memos, alerts, practice notes, industry updates, and reports from attendance at CLEs and conferences.

Evaluation and Implementation of Legal Technology 

  • Participate in demonstrations, proof of concepts, and pilots of new technologies that are being evaluated by the firm. 
  • Work with the KM department to deploy innovative Generative AI technology, including technology aimed at reducing manual data collection, automate document creation and workflow processes, drafting and summarizing legal documents, and to otherwise support the practices. 
  • Identify enhancement requests, test new releases, participate in beta versions of features with an eye towards improving legal technologies to the benefit of the GPGs and PATs,
  • Assist in the further development of existing legal technologies that reduce manual processes, automate functions, or track legal developments.

Lawyer Training on Legal Technology 

  • Assist the KM Lawyers with developing and presenting training on Generative AI legal technology that is tailored to the unique needs of the GPGs and PATs.
  • Identify possible gaps in substantive training and coordinate with Learning and Development to develop, organize and deliver (individually or with others) training, which may include workshops and off-site training.
  • Other duties as required by the practices.

Education and/or Experience:  

Required:

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a lawyer in a large law firm environment
  • Admitted to practice law in Illinois in good standing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think strategically about AI integration challenges.
  • Able to champion AI innovation to a wide range of audiences and comfortable teaching, coaching, and mentoring lawyers and professional staff
  • Broad technology understanding, with the ability to engage and liaise with both technical and non- technical audiences.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience working with machine learning technology or artificial intelligence (AI).
