As Vice President, you'll build and provide strategic oversight for teams providing sound, actionable, and insightful legal advice and counsel to all Claims units within Nationwide’s Property and Casualty Organization. This role leads a large team which provides strategic planning and tactical claims legal support for all Property Casualty lines of business. This partnership includes advising on operational risk management, claims litigation support, coverage considerations, claims technology and data analytic integration, claims vendor management, and implementation of new laws and regulations.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides preventive legal advice and counsel to Property Casualty Personal Lines, Commercial, Indemnity, and E&S Claims management teams on issues relating to claims matters. Proactively reviews business strategies to provide legal input and assist management in reaching business objectives while mitigating potential legal risk to the Nationwide companies. Maintains awareness of property and casualty insurance claims matters and keeps management apprised of significant legal issues and trends.
  • Assists staff attorneys in developing solutions in reaching business objectives while minimizing potential legal exposure to the Nationwide companies. Coordinates legal advice with the Litigation Practice Group to ensure appropriate corrective measures and changes are implemented as a result of litigation resolutions. Works with staff to coordinate claims legal opinions that involve the Property Casualty legal team in order to ensure a unified position among practice groups.
  • Leads functional and business collaboration by driving alignment and coordination across pertinent legal teams within OCLO, including Government Relations, Litigation, and Compliance to ensure collaborative mindset, consistent practices, and advice across all Property Casualty businesses. Educates business leaders on market trends, leading and lagging Nationwide claims performance metrics, and suggested proactive measures. Ensures an outside-in approach to for most efficient operations.

May Perform Other Responsibilities As Assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to SVP, P&C Legal. Leads a team of five Legal professionals with a total of 40+ associates.

Typical Skills And Experiences

Education: Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.

License/Certification/Designation : Associates reporting within Nationwide’s Office of the Chief Legal Officer (OCLO) who are functioning in attorney roles must be fully licensed in accordance with OCLO policy, in good standing and in compliance with all continuing legal education requirements at all times in the state(s) in which they practice.

Experience: Minimum of 15 years of relevant legal, financial services and property and casualty insurance and complex litigation strategy and management experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Experience working on corporate matters with senior executives and C-suite. Strong business and financial acuity. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience analyzing and communicating business and financial impact across Nationwide’s claims experience for senior executives. Ability to collaborate, lead and influence across teams. Ability to build organizational talent.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.
