The Senior Counsel will provide legal services, advice, guidance and counsel to business team members and business executives charged with management of the ongoing operations arising from multiple reinsurance and insurance companies.  The Senior Counsel will provide transactional and strategic legal advice regarding complex business relationships, compliance and regulatory matters and regularly liaise with management in order to assist in achieving key business priorities.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice and counsel to the business product lines and investment teams
  • Provide legal advice for all insurance and reinsurance matters arising from day-to-day commercial operations
  • Provide legal advice and strategic support to internal clients regarding disputes arising from our insurance and reinsurance partners
  • Apply combined business and legal judgment to proposed transactions, deals, relationships and business opportunities requiring legal attention
  • Support the development and maintenance of a strong culture of compliance
  • Monitor legal developments in the areas of insurance, reinsurance and compliance; develop an understanding of regulations and laws that impact the business and advise on same (primary focus will be on developments in life and long-term care insurance/reinsurance laws and regulations) 
  • In conjunction with General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, support the management of formal disputes and litigation, including management of outside counsel where appropriate
  • Review existing internal policies, procedures and practices and collaborate with business partners to develop and/or redesign in alignment with best practices
  • Assist in providing legal coverage for regulatory exams and inquiries
  • Oversee and provide periodic advice on information governance issues, such as litigation holds, document retention, and destruction policies

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an accredited university or college required
  • Must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements, including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located, prior to commencement of employment
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience as a practicing attorney with a focus in insurance and/or reinsurance operations, including experience in-house, at a regulatory agency or law firm, or a combination

Desired Characteristics:

  • Broad knowledge of legal and compliance risk areas associated with life, accident & health and/or long-term care insurance/reinsurance operations
  • Prior experience in large law firm or in-house legal department
  • Able to translate legal concepts into practical business solutions
  • Strong commitment to integrity and professionalism 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and legal research skills
  • Strong business judgment, strategic thinking, and client counseling skills
  • Proven ability to independently identify issues, analyze problems, and provide viable solutions
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, organizational and negotiation skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels of personnel and management, including senior executives
  • Ability to follow up on assignments in a timely manner, exercise good business judgment, and work accurately under pressure
