The Global Government Affairs group within the General Counsel’s Organization seeks a Director, U.S. Regulatory Relations – Reporting, Communications and Quality Assurance.  As the principal intermediary between the company and the supervisory personnel of its federal banking regulators, the U.S. Regulatory Relations (USRR) team plays a critical strategic role driving a cohesive approach to supervision, including by identifying focus areas of the regulators across engagements and preparing senior executives and the boards of both American Express (AXP) and American Express National Bank (AENB) for their interactions with agency personnel. The Reporting, Communications and Quality Assurance team within USRR (the “USRR Reporting team”) is chiefly responsible for analytics across supervisory engagements, a steady stream of reporting to the agencies, senior management and the AXP and AENB boards, and quality assurance testing to ensure adherence to performance standards in addressing regulatory inquiries and maintaining an internal repository of information about regulatory interactions. 

 

How will you make an impact in this role?

The new Director will be responsible for a suite of periodic and ad hoc regulatory reporting, quality assurance testing, communications, and analytics.  The successful candidate will be in charge of gathering insights and developing reports for C-Suite executives, the AXP and AENB Boards of Directors, and a range of critical stakeholders across the enterprise.  Special and hoc projects will provide additional growth opportunities. 

 The Director will collaborate closely with colleagues from the USRR Continuous Monitoring teams that directly support regulatory engagements, as well as the Global Risk & Compliance Regulatory Exam Lifecycle Management (RELM) team and the Internal Audit Group (IAG), to gather critical information and insights for various reports and communications. In so doing, this individual will play a critical role ensuring the quality and consistency of information shared with key stakeholders across business units and functions, which in turn facilitates a cohesive approach to regulatory supervision. This individual will also oversee quality assurance testing and reporting as well as collaborate with Technology, other USRR colleagues, and key end-users to design, improve, test, and implement capability solutions for the team.

 

Responsibilities 

  • Lead the development of various reporting products for regulators and other internal stakeholders including management committees and the AXP and AENB Boards and to fulfill regulatory requests.
  • Lead review of reporting source data for data quality and completeness. Collaborate with colleagues from USRR, RELM and IAG to drive process updates to ensure consistency in data quality.
  • Oversee quality assurance testing to assess and drive adherence to performance standards in addressing regulatory inquiries and maintaining an internal repository of information about regulatory interactions. Deliver quality assurance testing results and process failure root-cause solutioning, as needed.
  • Gather insights through data analytics to identify key thematic trends in regulatory activities and develop communications to bring this awareness to senior company leadership and other internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Technology teams to develop and manage automated solutions for efficient operations as well as data visualization for reporting purposes. Collaborate with data source systems owners to drive system enhancements, as needed.
  • Serve as the product manager for the USRR Reporting website. Understand requirements from key end-users and work with Technology to design and implement solutions. 
  • Lead the governance and operational aspects for the USRR Reporting team including procedures management, PRSA testing and certification, templates creation, training, etc.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience preferred
  • Advanced excel and data visualization skills such as Tableau, Power BI
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite
  • Proven experience and strong skills in preparing comprehensive and effective presentation materials
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to distill complex matters effectively
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail and project management skills
  • Ability to lead a team with strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships across teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a strong growth mind-set
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced matrix environment and to manage multiple deliverables simultaneously, operating with a sense of urgency as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and escalate issues appropriately and in a timely manner

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred.
  • Prior regulatory management experience and/or legal background preferred

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
