The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.

Description

The Deputy General Counsel – Litigation is responsible for providing dedicated litigation to protect and defend the enterprise in all lawsuits brought by and against Liberty Mutual.

The Litigation group oversees and provides advice and counsel and plays a key role in the formulation and implementation of overall legal strategy for the Company.

Provides highly specialized legal support to the Company including litigation and coverage services, centralized subpoena support, legal central files, and bankruptcy services. Provides leadership and direction to executive and professional legal staff. Engages and directs the work of outside counsel.

  • Strategic, proactive partner and member of legal leadership team.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the business environment strategy, and legal implications with clear links to our enterprise strategy.
  • Responsible for the accomplishment of the unit, department, and corporate goals. Sets goals that are in accordance with Corporate and Legal Department goals. Directs staff in the accomplishment of the goals.
  • Educates and/or partners with clients and across legal team on overall legal strategy and priorities to influence and consults on business strategies and decisions to drive better outcomes.
  • Brings business context to enterprise entire Legal team to inform and align legal strategies and priorities with business needs.
  • Champions legal initiatives guiding employees through change by communicating, coaching and leading team to disrupt ineffective behaviors and routines, move faster, minimize hand-offs, prioritize and eliminate redundancy.
  • Safeguards Enterprise from legal and brand risk. Represents and advises the Company in substantial legal and business transactions including providing advice and counsel on litigation and threat of litigation including coverage litigation, credit/collection, governmental investigations, and training. Recommend policy changes.
  • Determines strategy and oversees advice and counsel provided by Litigation and Coverage staff. Team provides legal support to Global Risk Solutions and US Retail Markets including Coverage Options and Complex & Emerging Litigation. Provides advice and counsel to the Company. Assists business units in achievement of their goals.
  • Assists business units in the development of plans and policies in response to newly passed legislation and regulations.
  • Performs comprehensive research and analysis in assigned areas of specialization; maintains current knowledge of legal and regulatory issues. Assesses implications to business units and provides guidance to eliminate or mitigate risk and liabilities. Evaluates legal trends for impact on Company.
  • Assesses and audits quality of legal services provided to the Company. Makes changes as necessary.
  • Represents the Company before legislative, regulatory and administrative bodies.
  • Represents the Company in litigated matters. Consults with business units to plan legal strategies.
  • Accountable for delivering results by enabling an inclusive, equitable, and high-performing culture in support of enterprise strategy.

Qualifications

 

  • Generally, requires at least fifteen years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Requirements include excellent analytic, legal writing and communication skills, familiarity with corporate operations and SBU objectives and demonstrated ability to interact with Company personnel as well as outside counsel and representatives of other companies and adversaries.
  • Requires expert knowledge of a specialized area of law.
  • Completion of law school with a J.D. or L.L.M. degree and admission to the bar of at least one jurisdiction in the United States required.
