DESCRIPTION
The Senior Counsel-Employment Practices & Compliance supports multiple client groups and stakeholders at varying levels on wage and hour matters, workplace accommodations, protected leave, claims of harassment, discrimination, paid sick leave and benefits support and compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment regulations in the US, Canada, and UK.
The Senior Counsel may direct and oversee investigations alleging unlawful employment actions. Additionally, the Senior Counsel works with and oversees outside counsel to defend lawsuits and agency charges filed against the Company.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions:
Provide practical and business-oriented advice and counsel on a range of employment law issues arising in both corporate and frontline segments of the business, i.e. hiring, performance management, discipline, terminations, internal investigations, contingent worker issues, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour compliance, and general employee risk management.
Provide advice and counsel with regard to legal compliance issues impacting employees and assist in developing strategic plans for all employment-related matters, including but not limited to, policies, procedures, and training.
Research legal principles and precedents, engage and manage outside counsel, draft legal documents, gather relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods, provide work guidance to the Company by actively developing solutions to problems presented.
Coordinate and supervise responses to administrative charges, demand letters and other potential disputes against the company through negotiation or mediation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree/Doctor of Law (JD)
Certification/License: Active State Bar in good standing
Experience Requirements:
4+ years of experience in employment law in a law firm and/or in-house with an emphasis on the following specialty areas: labor and employment-related litigation, administrative proceedings (state or federal), advice & counsel, and compliance issues optimally in a multi-site, multi-jurisdictional work environment.
Excellent communication skills—able to influence at all of levels and across functions in a complex organization.
Able to gather information and analyze data or situations to make valid conclusions and propose actionable recommendations.
Ability to lead in complex, unclear, and stressful situations with limited direction.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability Requirements:
Knowledge of and experience with employment laws and regulations.
Ability to solve complex, highly sensitive work-related issues.
Superior interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
Work in a fast-paced environment.
To work as a member of a team with collegiality and professionalism.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint.
