Job Description Summary
The Senior Director, Legal Services (Insured Litigation) is responsible for managing litigation covered by a general liability insurance policy, including overseeing outside counsel, providing strategic legal advice, developing policies and procedures to ensure consistency across various matters, and working closely with internal teams such as operations and Risk Management to ensure effective resolution of litigated matters.
Job Description
Oversee and manage litigation matters covered by a general liability insurance policy, including personal injury claims typically arising out of the operation of multifamily residential properties. Develop and implement legal strategies to effectively and efficiently manage large portfolio of litigated matters in a wide variety of jurisdictions. Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure consistency across various matters, including in discovery, pleadings, and briefs. Supervise and manage outside counsel to ensure effective representation of the company in legal proceedings. Collaborate closely with risk management on claims to ensure the company's interests are protected by applicable insurance policies and that litigation strategies align with the company's risk management objectives. Provide considered and practical guidance to operations and business teams regarding the litigation process and serve as a liaison between company representatives and outside counsel. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all litigation matters and prepare regular reports for senior leaders. Required Licenses or Certifications:
Licensed to practice law in at least one state and an active member and in good standing with a state bar.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
At least ten years of relevant work experience, particularly in insurance defense and general liability, preferably in the multifamily, hospitality, restaurant, retail, or similar industries. Significant experience independently managing general liability-related litigation in an in-house environment. Deep understanding of general liability insurance-related matters, including insurance policies, exclusions, and other coverage issues. Demonstrated competency with risk shifting provisions in contracts such as indemnification, insurance, and limitations of liability. Demonstrated skill in gaining the respect and credibility of both internal and external business associates and work a collaborative team environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to make effective and persuasive presentations and reports to clients, claimants, company leadership, and others, strong interpersonal skills including tact/diplomacy, persuasion, negotiation, and cooperation. Strong internal consulting skills and a practical common sense and business-oriented approach to solving legal problems. Ability to perform legal research, work independently and self-directed; able to prioritize workload and adapt to changing priorities. Understanding of complex legal concepts and terminology with proven ability to adapt skills and knowledge base quickly to learn of legal and risk issues. Able to perform under tight deadlines while maintaining patience in high pressure situations. Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school with a minimum of ten years of experience in-house or at a law firm performing applicable work.
The salary range for this position is $150,000 - $180,000
Additional Compensation:
Corporate Positions: In addition to the base salary, this role may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus program based on individual and company performance. Onsite Property Positions: In addition to the base salary, this role may be eligible to participate in weekly, monthly, and/or quarterly bonus programs.
