Position Overview
Evernorth Health Services is the pharmacy, care, and benefits solutions division of The Cigna Group. The Chief Counsel will be responsible for executive leadership, strategic advice and counsel, and oversight of all legal support for Evernorth. This role will lead the team of attorneys who provide legal support for all aspects of the Evernorth business, including contracting, regulatory, operations, growth strategy, product development and risk mitigation issues. The position requires a deep understanding of the health care industry, managed care, benefits, and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) sectors.
Essential Functions
Serve as primary legal advisor to Evernorth executive leadership as well as member of legal SLT; lead the business law team supporting Evernorth Health Services.Provide strategic legal advice to senior leadership on enterprise-wide growth strategies, legal and regulatory issues, risks, and opportunities.Oversee and manage Evernorth legal support, including new product design, regulatory support, audit support, drafting and negotiation of complex care management and value-based arrangements; network contracting, sales/broker contracting oversight and support; product marketing support; complex intercompany agreements and third-party risk management. Support Government Affairs, Regulatory, Compliance, Corporate Law and Litigation teams in significant Evernorth business matters, including audits and investigations and the impact and response to proposed and new rules, regulations and legislation.Provide thought leadership in advocacy and develop strategies to support favorable Evernorth Business legislation and litigation outcomes.Lead various strategic projects and provide strategic advice on mergers, acquisitions and strategic alliances across the business. Provide cross-functional coaching and development within Cigna Legal on Evernorth objectives, market trends, and risks and opportunities.Oversee the selection, retention, management, and evaluation of outside counsel (including budget development) as necessary and appropriate.
Qualifications
J.D. from accredited law school/Bar membership required.15+ years corporate legal department or law firm experience, with significant experience in healthcare (PBM, pharmacy, health services, and/or managed care experience strongly preferred)Demonstrated leader of large legal teams, with excellent team building with execution mindset, project-management skills, strong analytical skills and intellectual rigor, collaboration mindset, high personal integrity, and commitment to providing the highest level of service to internal and external clients.Strong listening, influencing and interpersonal skills with business clients and enterprise colleagues to foster collaboration across businesses and functions to drive results. Strong ability to maneuver through business barriers to facilitate solutions.Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to distill complex regulatory issues into practical, actionable legal advice.Excellent analytical skills and critical thinker.Strategic and pragmatic legal and business advisor.Influential among leaders and stakeholders up, down and across the organization through relationship management, judgment, and interpersonal savvy.Ability to drive change across the organization and effectively lead the implementation of new and innovative approaches. Experience in measuring and analyzing process, as well as results, to identify opportunities for improvement.
