About The Team

The Global Music Legal team supports all music-related business of the company

ByteDance is looking for a product counsel to join its Global Music Legal team and provide support for the company's AI-related initiatives. The role will be an integral resource for key internal stakeholders, including Product teams, by reviewing new projects, applications, features and functionalities and providing guidance related to music rights implications and risk mitigation strategies. The position will have a global focus and will be based in Los Angeles, CA, San Jose, CA or Seattle, WA and will work closely with and report to the team's leader.

Responsibilities

You will be a principal point of contact on the Global Music Legal team for various internal stakeholders, including Product and AI research teams, which are responsible for AI-related initiatives. You will work collaboratively with members of the Global Music Legal, Global Legal-IP-Copyright and Global Legal-AI teams to assess potential music rights issues and other risk implications of AI-related initiatives, and provide risk mitigation guidance and recommendations. You will liaise with internal legal subject matter expert teams, and external counsel, as needed. You will work with cross-functional partners on the Music Content Solutions, Public Policy and Product Policy teams to administer AI-music related platform policies and compliance with contractual and other legal obligations. You will be responsible for monitoring and informing your colleagues on the Global Music Legal team and internal stakeholders, including Product and Business Development teams, of legal developments and trends in the rapidly evolving AI music space, including state and federal legislation in the U.S. and regulations and lawsuits globally.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus a Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and member in good standing of a U.S. state bar with experience in private law practice or in-house, providing product counseling for a technology company or application Subject matter expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning practices and underlying technology Excellent English language written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal and organizational skills Ability to work independently on many different projects at once in a dynamic, fast-paced environment Experience working collaboratively and cross-functionally with international teams, with tight turn-around times and deadlines Entrepreneurial, business-enabling, risk-tolerant mindset, flexible, self-starting, hard-working, with a willingness to work across multiple time zones, outside of normal business hours in your home territory Strategic thinker with a pragmatic, creative, risk-based approach to problem-solving, comfortable dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity

Preferred Qualifications

Fluency in Mandarin Chinese language due to working closely with the music business in China Experience leveraging operational teams and technologies to drive process implementations and improvements

【For Pay Transparency】Compensation Description (Annually)

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $133000 - $216600 annually.

Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.

Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location. Employees have day one access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with company match, paid parental leave, short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, among others. Employees also receive 10 paid holidays per year, 10 paid sick days per year and 17 days of Paid Personal Time (prorated upon hire with increasing accruals by tenure).
