The Associate Counsel for employment works as part of the RKT Holdings Legal team on matters involving employment law for a variety of business partners. The ideal candidate has experience advising U.S. clients on a wide variety of employment and labor law related issues, has experience monitoring adherence to employment-related laws and regulations, and experience establishing processes to ensure continued compliance.
About the Role
- Partner with Human Resources experts to develop and oversee compliance and risk mitigation strategies towards the fostering of a culture of organizational compliance and ethics
- Implement audit / monitoring processes across the Human Resource function, ensuring ongoing periodic review of existing and new processes built across the team
- Establish and execute periodic audits of existing HR policies, ensuring remediation where potential compliance issues arise
- Conduct regular audits and assessments of HR processes, documentation and practices to identify areas of non-compliance or potential risk and develop strategies to mitigate risks
- Research and advise on policies, procedures, statutes and regulations
- Monitor changes in employment laws, regulations and industry standards to ensure our policies and practices remain compliant
- Provide guidance on risk management practices to relevant stakeholders on the HR team
- Drive initiatives that address regulatory requirements that are aligned with team member life cycle events including recruiting, onboarding, team member development, team member experience, and off-boarding (team member moves and departures)
- Manage document retention compliance and workflows
- Advise and counsel internal clients regarding employment related questions
- Oversee the development of compliance-related training sessions on a variety of HR compliance requirements, ethical standards and best practices
About You
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA accredited law school and admission to Michigan Bar or the ability to practice in-house for a Michigan company
- 3 years of experience practicing as an attorney, with a focus on labor and employment law
- Experience exercising independent judgment and discretion while utilizing company policies and practices to determine appropriate action
- Experience with monitoring changes in employment law/policy and analyzing its impact on the business
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with ever changing requirements
- Skill at distilling abstract concepts into clear, simple terms coupled with effective legal advice
- Exceptional organization and team work skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of compliance monitoring in the areas of: compensation, benefits and other employment practices; and federal and multi-state employment laws, including an understanding of the state/municipal regulatory framework required to ensure corporate compliance with employment laws
- Experience providing support to human resources and on related systems and/or employment law matters
- Canadian employment law knowledge and experience
- Experience advising corporate clients on federal and state employment and labor laws, including FMLA, ADA, Title VII, FLSA, and any other state/federal employment laws in 50 states and Canada
