Overview

The position provides oversight, leadership, direction, and monitoring of all litigation activities and results from AmTrust’s outside counsel firms operating in the West Region. Establishes long- and short-term business and litigation strategies in coordination with the Litigation Leadership team. The position will also oversee the continued and ongoing development of AmTrust’s outside counsel panel in multiple lines of business, including but not limited to general liability, professional liability, commercial auto and coverage. Position will also serve as a critical partner to our AmTrust’s claims teams in upholding AmTrust’s mission, vision, values, and standards of excellence in litigating claims.

Responsibilities

Direct oversight and management responsibilities of all outside counsel lawyers and firms in the West Region. Oversight of attorney selection for each litigated claim. Constant proactive management, evaluation and reevaluation of all lawyers and law firms to ensure both quantitative and qualitative performance. Constant proactive management of the outside counsel panel to ensure the optimal number of law firms, proper coverage in each jurisdiction and for each line of business Directs or champions the development of new or innovative solutions and measures of success to achieve optimal results for AmTrust and its insureds. Provide timely and appropriate advice, counsel and leadership working as a liaison between claims or other executive management on active and ongoing litigation matters. Takes a practical approach to establishing and improving work and litigation initiatives; keeps involved in major litigation developments as required to drive strategy and results. Focus on building relationships and shares learnings and insights with peers across the organization to capitalize on lessons learned and solutions. Fosters collaboration, partnership and communication to achieve department and company goals. Embrace the use of data and key performance indicators. Lead and challenge outside counsel to achieve the best possible result for AmTrust and its insureds in every case. Performs periodic onsite case reviews and/or audits Liaison between legal billing vendor and law firms Performs other litigation department related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

Juris Doctor from Accredited Law School State Bar licensed attorney in a State West of the Mississippi 10+ years in practice of law; 7 years’ experience in leadership roles supervising multiple attorneys Significant experience handling insurance defense litigation for multiple insurance carriers is a must Ability to handle tough and honest communications with clients and internal business partners Experienced leader of attorneys Demonstrates advanced understanding of litigation strategy and execution for multiple lines of insurance and ability to adapt litigation understanding to multiple jurisdictions Proven track record of earning and keeping the trust of clients and colleagues Entrepreneurial spirit and focus on customers as shown though courage to pursue new and unprecedented opportunities and unique ways to reach goals Ability to synthesize and draw conclusions from large amounts of data, translating the data into actions and results

Multi-state Bar admittance Experience with legal case management systems Experience working in private practice and staff counsel environments Advanced use of Excel
