All members of AARP’s OGC advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on organization mission.

AARP’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a mid-level Product Attorney who will be be responsible for supporting business units with creating risk-managed user experiences. This attorney will advise product development teams on legal requirements across a wide range of areas that include intellectual property, consumer protection, accessibility, e-commerce, data protection, privacy and other areas as needed. The successful candidate understands the business objectives and processes needed to support and accelerate digital product development. The candidate would have an internal sense of urgency to complete milestones on time, collaborates well across internal legal and business teams, and can exercise judgment and agility to provide legal advice based on ambiguous or incomplete information. This attorney puts the consumer at the center of every judgment call and recommendation.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies legal risk.
  • Analyzes and researches legal issues.
  • Reviews and negotiates contracts.
  • Provides legal guidance on membership issues.
  • Provides legal guidance on nonprofit tax law.
  • Provides legal guidance on intellectual property matters.

Qualifications

  • JD degree and 5+ years of experience as product counsel.
  • Business and legal acumen related to technology product launches and the underlying cloud infrastructure and solutions.
  • Working knowledge of a wide range of legal domains, including
    • Consumer protection laws, including FTC regulations and state unfair competition laws
    • Communications and marketing regulations, including TCPA, CAN-SPAM and FTC guidance
    • Web accessibility and inclusivity regulations, including ADA and WCAG
    • E-commerce and digital transactions regulations, including UETA, E-SIGN and state-specific requirements
    • Intellectual property laws, including DMCA.
  • Must be, or have the ability to become, a member in good standing with the District of Columbia bar or an equivalent state bar.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Must uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethics; a passion for our nonprofit mission is a valuable asset.
  • Capable of managing multiple complex projects simultaneously while maintaining a high volume of work, demonstrating strong attention to detail.

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
