The Legal & Policy Team is Snap’s dedicated in-house law firm, policy consultant, lobbyist, thought partner, and all-around advisor. This team helps Snap do the right thing the right way, make better decisions, understand and manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges, both external and internal. We partner with Snap team members on a wide array of matters, including privacy, product, IP, commercial transactions, corporate governance, employment, acquisitions, litigation, and policy, and social impact. We’re looking for a multidimensional patent prosecution paralegal to join our Patent Team!

 

What you’ll do:

  • Be a team member on the Patent Team, an in-house patent creation, litigation, and strategy center, to help Snap do things the right way, make sound decisions, manage risks, and creatively navigate challenges both internally and externally.

  • Work with Snap’s diverse engineering and product teams, the patent creation team, and outside counsel to protect Snap’s innovations.  

  • Work with outside counsel on scheduling disclosure meetings with inventors when requested.

  • Coordinate collection of formal documents, including Declarations, Powers of Attorney, Assignments, and other formal documents as required by foreign countries. 

  • Support the Patent Team’s attorneys and professionals with patent prosecution by issue spotting, resolving discrepancies, errors, and omissions.

  • Work with Snap’s HR and Legal Operations teams to help with outside counsel requests

  • Maintain a solid understanding of Snap product lines and relevant industry technologies and use that knowledge to inform IP strategy.

  • Become deeply familiar with a diverse range of technologies covered by our patent portfolio.

  • Other administrative and general office duties supporting patent attorneys and lead paralegal.

  • Assist with miscellaneous client-related projects.
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Self-starter who is solution oriented and able to set priorities with minimal direction

  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional ability to keep track of deadlines

  • Ability to creatively think outside-the-box 

  • Proficient with patent asset management systems, e.g., IPFolio 

  • Collaborative teammate who can connect well with a broad range of people, including outside counsel, colleagues, business partners, and engineering teams

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, including editing and proofreading skills

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Ability to collaborate with others and work independently.

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • State-approved accredited paralegal certification

  • 3+ years of experience as a patent prosecution paralegal in a corporate (in-house) IP team or IP law firm  

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the patent prosecution terminology, processes, requirements, and systems for U.S. and international.

  • Experience managing IP records and generating portfolio reports

  • Proficiency in intellectual property electronic databases, including the USPTO’s patent center and assignment search, Espacenet, and the WIPO database

  • Strong attention to detail, excellent communication (both written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be efficient, flexible, ability to prioritize multiple projects and work in a fast-paced team environment.
     

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in patent docketing and prosecution administration

Compensation

In the United States, work locations are assigned a pay zone which determines the salary range for the position. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. The starting pay may be negotiable within the salary range for the position. These pay zones may be modified in the future.

 

Zone A (CA, WA, NYC):

The base salary range for this position is $94,000-$141,000 annually. 

 

Zone B:

The base salary range for this position is $89,000-$134,000 annually.

 

Zone C:

The base salary range for this position is $80,000-$120,000 annually.

This position is eligible for equity in the form of RSUs.
