Summary of Job Duties:

The University of Arkansas Staff Attorney is a member of the School of Law Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative (IFAI) team. The position is responsible for collaborative development, execution and maintenance of a regulatory portfolio and tribal governance/tribal economic development strategy for IFAI located within the University of Arkansas School of Law. The Staff Attorney will work directly with tribal governments on matters of governance and economic development, tribal colleges, intertribal organizations, and federal government agencies as well as the partners to the Initiative in the execution of Initiative programs. The position reports to and is evaluated by the Senior Managing Director and works in collaboration with colleagues throughout the campus. The Staff Attorney is also responsible for research, resource material drafting and development, and educational outreach for targeted stakeholder groups pursuant to grant related deliverables. This position may be required to travel long distances by air or vehicle on behalf of IFAI for various events.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • JD Degree from an accredited law school or an international law degree
  • At least six months of legal experience (legal internships will be considered to meet experience criteria)
  • At least six months experience working with tribal policy and agriculture
  • Experience working with Native American populations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience between American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian governments and communities on complex issues related to agriculture and food, rural economic development, business development and related areas
  • Willingness to work as part of a complex team of professionals on issues related to supporting of Native farmers and ranchers
  • Experience interfacing with Native American organizations, tribal governments and intertribal organizations

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding working with issues and law and policy issues affecting Native populations
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to identify and evaluate problems as well as devise effective solutions with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage workloads
  • Demonstrated ability to handle law and policy matters, interface with the public, and seek answers and solutions to matters
  • Demonstrated ability to use critical thinking skills to find solutions to policy issues facing native communities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • Ability to speak effectively one on one in small groups or in large groups across a variety of formats including in person and virtual presentations

Additional Information:

This position is renewable annually based on continued need for the position, availability of funding, and satisfactory job performance.

$75,000 - $85,000
