All members of AARP’s OGC advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on organization mission.

AARP’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is seeking an experienced Managing Attorney (IP & Media) who will be responsible for trademark, copyright, domain name and enforcement activities for the organization, as well as providing compliance support to AARP’s media and editorial team. This attorney will manage a small team and oversee outside counsel and external vendors, as well as serve as the organization’s primary contact for intellectual property and media matters.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and mitigates intellectual property (IP), marketing law, and media law legal risk.
  • Provides counseling to media organization on applicable legal issues.
  • Directs IP registration and enforcement strategy.
  • Maintains IP portfolio.
  • Independently reviews and negotiates contracts for IP, marketing, and media issues.
  • Creates and implements scalable review processes for review of editorial and promotional content.
  • Manages other IP attorneys and legal professionals.

Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school with 5+ years of experience in trademark, copyright, and media law, including at least 2 years in a law firm setting.
  • Admitted to practice, active member, and in good standing with a state Bar, with the capability to serve as an in-house attorney in the District of Columbia.
  • Strong presentation abilities, with a talent for educating others about intellectual property in a clear and impactful manner.
  • Confident negotiator who can effectively explain IP contract obligations and legal risks to business stakeholders using clear and actionable language.
  • Highly skilled in identifying IP contract risks and developing effective mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with brand protection strategies within the digital ecosystem.
  • Ability to work autonomously while knowing when to escalate issues and collaborate as needed.
  • Must operate with the highest degree of integrity and ethical standards, while managing multiple complex projects simultaneously and maintaining strong attention to detail.

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
