All members of AARP’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on organization mission.

The OGC - States, Programs and Membership Manager is responsible for managing compliance around the programs and state office work, membership at AARP, working with the attorneys, business units, and other relevant teams. The manager provides direction to stakeholders in accordance with legal guidance from attorneys, helps manage various information intake and executes workflows to achieve compliance, regulatory and mission objectives. Maintains working knowledge of relevant mission related matters and regulatory requirements. Must work fluently within relevant tools and software.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces, supports and manages the enterprise’s regulatory and compliance framework set by attorneys. Exercises and applies sound judgement to effectively assess and balance risk with business objectives. Identifies, evaluates and escalates when appropriate, the more complicated or new questions requiring additional input.
  • Partners with relevant teams and business units on the implementation and execution of policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ensures operations and integration of a variety of platforms for states, program and membership-related matters with other business units.
  • Provides complete and timely reviews on substantive matters related to membership and program and state initiatives. Provides education, training and guidance to clients in order to create efficiencies of development and reviews.
  • Collaborates with teams throughout AARP and its affiliates on strategic business unit objectives, identifying trends and working to resolve systemic issues around how business units work with OGC and resolves challenges to optimize results. Creates and administers systems and templates to facilitate efficient legal input to strategies and discreet questions.
  • Ensures strong communication within a matrixed environment and acts as a liaison to resolve problems and ensure successful implementation of legal guidance on organizational initiatives.
  • Represents OGC on internal working groups.
  • Partner with AARP legal team and leadership to to manage and execute on legal guidelines around social welfare products, programs and state and membership initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong appreciation for AARP's mission and understanding of how the organization's various work streams, particularly programs and membership, support that mission.
  • Ability to identify potential legal issues within the program and membership domains, and discernment to handle matters independently or seek guidance from OGC colleagues as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the professional confidence and enthusiasm for collaborative work necessary to engage productively with diverse clients and OGC team members.
  • Highly organized as an individual, with the capacity to assist in maintaining order and organization within the Tax, Affiliates, and Membership vertical of OGC.
  • Open and eager to expand their understanding of nonprofit law and apply that knowledge within AARP's unique structure and culture.
  • Capable of handling multiple subject areas within a single day and communicating clearly and consistently within the OGC vertical without constant supervision.

Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
