Legal Department

The Legal team is responsible for managing the company's legal affairs from compliance through litigation, collaborating with departments such as Sales, Operations, Human Resources, and Innovation along the way. The Legal team also works closely with external law firms to develop a comprehensive legal strategy and manages these partners to address issues efficiently and effectively. Unlike many other companies where legal roles are purely advisory, Vantage distinguishes itself by granting our legal staff the authority to directly influence business decisions. This empowers our internal team to align legal strategies with long-term operational goals, risk management, and cost efficiency to deliver outcomes that support corporate objectives. This approach allows each team member to make significant, impactful decisions, driving substantial results for the company.

Position Overview

This role can be based in any of our US locations: Denver, CO or Ashburn, VA.

The Director, Associate General Counsel will play a critical role in providing legal support and strategic guidance to all departments across the North American business. This position requires a detail-oriented and proactive legal professional with experience in corporate law, commercial contracts and employment law. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing a diverse range of legal matters and working collaboratively across departments to ensure the company’s legal and business objectives are met. You should have a professional-growth mindset and be willing to bring forth ideas that can benefit Vantage.

Essential Job Functions

Legal Advisory and Risk Management:

  • Be a key part of the Legal team in delivering high-quality legal services and risk management, ensuring group-wide requirements are embedded in processes delivering Vantage’s data center developments and operations.
  • Support Vantage and be a strategic partner by providing practical, proactive, business-focused, solutions-oriented, and sound legal advice to enable Vantage to achieve its business and strategic objectives while fully and appropriately managing legal risk.
  • Instruct and manage outside counsel, especially for legal advice related to the specific laws of various jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for managing outside counsel spend in line with the legal budget.

Commercial Contracts:

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including vendor agreements, construction agreements and procurement contracts.
  • Advise on legal risks and implications related to business decisions and operations.
  • Update and maintain templates to support the needs of the business.

Litigation Management:

  • Manage and oversee litigation matters, including working with outside counsel and coordinating internal resources.
  • Develop strategies to minimize legal risks and resolve disputes effectively

Human Resources :

  • Partner with the People Team and manage all legal matters, including employment law issues, employee relations and policy development.
  • Oversee HR compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Provide guidance on employee contracts, terminations, disciplinary actions and workplace investigations.
  • Collaborate with the People Team to ensure employment practices are fair, legal and aligned with company policies and values.

Internal Collaboration:

  • Work closely with various departments, including operations, IT, finance, construction and development to provide integrated legal support.
  • Assist in developing strategies that align the legal function with overall business goals.

Additional Duties:

  • Handle additional duties as assigned by Management.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school and admission to a State Bar

Experience:

  • 8+ years of relevant legal experience, with strong background in an in-house position
  • Experience in corporate law and governance, employment law and commercial contracts
  • Experience within the data center or telecommunications industry preferred, but not required.

Skills:

  • High level of integrity, professionalism and discretion
  • Executive presence and effective communication skills
  • Well-rounded corporate and commercial lawyer who is also a practical and business-minded executive.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal and written comprehension skills. Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills and stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Ability to analyze complex business concepts and documents.
  • Ability to effectively respond to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints in a timely manner.
  • Flexible, adaptable and self-directed; able to work in a variety of circumstances; e.g. remotely, across multiple time zones, cross functionally, by project, etc.
  • Successful candidate must be a team player, able to work with a variety of people.
  • Excellent organization and problem-solving skills that enable the successful candidate to juggle multiple responsibilities at once and consistently meet tight deadlines.
  • Impeccable integrity, credibility, character and ethics.
  • Travel required is expected to be up to 10% but may increase over time as the business evolves.

Additional Details

  • Salary Range: $175,000-$190,000 Base + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado market data and may vary in other locations)
  • This position is eligible for company benefits including but not limited to medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and AD&D, short and long-term disability coverage, paid time off, employee assistance, participation in a 401k program that includes company match, and many other additional voluntary benefits.
  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
