_ Who We’re Looking For

Toyota’s Legal Department (TL1) is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Business Litigation (BL) Managing Counsel.

The primary responsibility of this role is to serve as Managing Counsel in the BL group and handle complex consumer class actions, oversee and manage a wide range of pre-litigation and litigation matters, identify and develop customer-focused solutions and provide critical legal guidance and direction to business stakeholders.

Reporting to the Vice President/Deputy General Counsel and will closely collaborate with the BL team, other Managing Counsel, and paralegals to achieve the best possible results in a cost-effective manner.

This position is based at our North American headquarters in Plano, Texas. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within commutable distance of this location.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Manage, coordinate and oversee high stakes lawsuits brought by and against Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) which includes consumer class actions, antitrust matters, general commercial disputes and regulatory controversies.
  • Work with outside counsel to provide a best-in-class defense for TMNA and its parent company TMC in litigated matters.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to all levels and aspects of the business to mitigate legal risk which includes addressing pre-litigation claims, demand letters, inquiries from regulators and government, etc.
  • Manage litigation in an efficient and cost-effective manner that aligns with business goals and objectives, engaging in civil justice reform efforts and working with other Toyota global regions.
  • Communicate with management, colleagues in Japan and other Toyota stakeholders on litigation and other special projects as may be requested to support TL1 and the litigation group.

What You Bring

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Texas State Bar, or admission to another U.S. state bar and able to obtain license to practice in Texas.
  • Relevant litigation experience at a major law firm and/or corporate law department.
  • Extensive experience in all aspects of trial and litigation management, including risk assessment, strategy development, discovery, motion practice, settlement evaluation, mediation, arbitration, appeals, and selection and management of outside counsel and experts.
  • Proven ability to manage and adapt to busy, high-volume portfolio of active litigation, pre-litigation claims, and business client requests for legal advice, including time-sensitive and high-priority matters.
  • Strong sense of inclusion and teamwork and demonstrated ability to support and collaborate with colleagues and business partners.
  • Strong customer focus and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong drafting and communications skills, particularly in executive-level briefings.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and process-development skills.

Added bonus if you have

  • Significant experience representing automotive clients.
  • Significant experience in consumer claims and class actions.
  • Trial experience.
