U.S. Associate – Environmental & Permitting, Energy & Infrastructure and Corporate  

 

Linklaters’ US environmental team is growing and looking for a mid-level environmental & permitting associate (classes 2019-2021 preferred) to join the New York or Washington D.C. office. U.S. J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar and/or D.C. Bar are required.

 

The US environmental team works closely with the global and US Energy & Infrastructure teams and the global and US Corporate teams on a broad range of novel and exciting matters. The global and US Energy & Infrastructure teams specialize in representing sponsors, developers, lenders and investors in large scale, award winning and market-leading US and cross-border transactions covering renewables (particularly solar and offshore / onshore wind), nuclear, hydrogen and other decarbonization / energy transition technologies, infrastructure (including digital, social and transport), energy storage and transmission, mining, LNG, thermal power and water. The global and US Corporate teams specialize in award winning and market-leading US and cross-border M&A transactions with clients’ businesses across the chemicals, industrials, healthcare, mining and metals, media, cable, technology and telecommunications industries. In addition, the US environmental team works closely with Linklaters’ global ESG team that is based out of the firm’s London office on a range of innovative ESG matters.

 

Typical day-to-day tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assessing environmental risks of proposed transactions with guidance from the broader team;
  • Conducting legal research (federal and state statutes / regulations / guidance materials / caselaw) and drafting informal / formal memos summarizing findings for the broader team;
  • Helping broader team coordinate with and review local environmental counsel research and due diligence inquiries;
  • Reviewing environmental reports / permits / other documentation and drafting due diligence inquiries / reports for the broader team;
  • Reviewing and editing indemnity / representations and warranties / etc. provisions in proposed transaction agreements to address environmental risks; and
  • Assisting Sponsors with identifying and obtaining necessary permits to develop projects.

 

A strong candidate will have a background in a wide range of US environmental laws, including the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Experience with U.S. domestic renewables (including solar, offshore / onshore wind, energy storage and alternative fuels) is a plus. Transactional experience is also a plus.

The base salary range offered for this role will be between $260,000 and $365,000 and represents the firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant experience, performance, qualifications, as well as the needs of the firm.

 

The total compensation package for this position may include discretionary bonuses and other benefits.
