Job Summary

AmeriLife is seeking an Assistant General Counsel experienced in employment and litigation matters to join our corporate legal team, working closely with our human resources department. Reporting into the Chief Legal Officer, you will be responsible for managing and directing day-to-day employment law, labor and employee relation activities and providing legal advice and representation to our business on a wide range of labor and employment law matters, and assisting with other commercial litigation matters that arise from time to time. This role requires a deep understanding of federal, state, and local labor and employment laws nationwide, as well as the ability to effectively navigate complex legal issues and provide strategic guidance.

The candidate should have hands-on experience in handling employment and commercial litigation matters from start to finish, including workplace investigations, wrongful termination, EEOC, discrimination and wage and hour matters.

  • Litigate an array of commercial, regulatory and employment matters independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Investigate and respond to highly sensitive employee relations claims, demand letters, and other issues and conduct investigations related to employment matters.
  • Manage non-litigated employment and commercial disputes with or without outside counsel.
  • Proactively address and resolve potential employment and commercial disputes while providing risk mitigation advice to business clients and supporting business objectives.
  • Be an active, strategic leader handling a diverse range of complex litigation and pre-litigation matters in numerous jurisdictions.
  • Partner with human resources to advise and assist business units with restructurings, redundancies, terminations, and layoffs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support and maintain compliance with all relevant laws as it relates to company handbooks, policies and procedures, and action plans.
  • Provide employment-related support on transactional matters including ERISA, contract drafting and negotiation, acquisition-related advice, and review of compensation and benefits plans.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis to stay current on developments in labor and employment law and provide guidance to the business accordingly.
  • Draft and review legal documents, related to labor and employment matters.
  • Handle or, as necessary, manage with the assistance of outside counsel, employment litigation, agency matters, and health and safety initiatives.
  • Perform routine litigation tasks such as legal research, interviewing witnesses, conducting investigations, manage potential insurance claims, drafting/responding to discovery, taking/defending depositions, mediating, negotiating, and conducting arbitrations.
  • Provide training and education to business and internal stakeholders on labor and employment law topics, best practices, and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Florida state bar and in good standing.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing labor and employment law, with in-house law department and/or law firm experience.
