The Community Choice Financial® Family of Brands is currently seeking a Deputy General Counsel- Regulatory. The Legal Department is looking for an experienced, business minded consumer finance regulatory/generalist attorney who can help lead its regulatory group. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, the DGC is responsible for managing a diverse array of consumer lending regulatory matters, general legal matters involving privacy, corporate governance, finance, and legal operations issues, as well as, contracts, and assisting in developing and managing a team of highly talented legal professionals. A key objective of the DGC is to balance the Company’s business and financial objectives while minimizing potential legal liability and risk. This position also provides advice and strategy with respect to various Company policies, guidelines, and practices.
Essential Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Chief Legal Officer, Legal Department colleagues, and other department leadership, including senior executives, to provide support, advice, and counsel on strategic issues and concerns.
- Provide expert advice to senior management concerning laws, rules, and regulations, and their impact to the Company’s current and future business practices.
- Draft product agreements, terms and conditions, and disclosures, as well as correspondence, memoranda, contracts, and other legal documents.
- Monitor, research, and analyze existing laws, rules, and regulations to evaluate and assess their impact on the Company’s business operations.
- Work with operations, compliance, and other Company stakeholders to develop, modify, and interpret policies, practices, and procedures to confirm to legal requirements and to ensure legal compliance.
- Negotiate third party contracts related to consumer financial products and services in a manner that comports with regulatory guidance and optimizes strategic results.
- Assist with various transactions and other Legal Department projects as needed.
- Manage a team of attorneys and direct and supervise outside law firms on specific projects where appropriate.
- Maintain a full-time work schedule with regular, in-person attendance during normal business hours, at a minimum, 40 hours per week.
- Ability to meet the physical demands for this position, which frequently include: the ability to remain in a stationary position, move about freely inside and occasionally outside of the office, and the operation of mechanical controls, such as a keyboard.
Minimum Qualifications
- J.D. from an accredited law school and membership in at least one state bar in U.S.
- Demonstrated record for success strategizing, handling, and managing complex regulatory matters.
- Licensed attorney with 10+ years of experience in a law firm and/or an in-house legal department handling complex regulatory matters, ideally including interaction with state and/or federal regulators.
- Strong regulatory experience is highly desired.
- Broad base of substantive law relating to financial services companies.
- Creative, entrepreneurial, quick thinking, pragmatic business-oriented advice and ability to properly balance risks and business reward; ability to craft legal solutions in novel ways is essential.
- Highly motivated, efficient, and organized; able to juggle multiple projects at a time in a fast-paced environment, both collaborating as a team and working independently
- Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to advocate for a position while maintaining open-minded approach.
- Good sense of humor, disdain for drama and desire to get things done.
- Experience leading and growing a legal team, including managing other attorneys.
- Experience partnering across an in-house legal team to develop strategic and pragmatic advice to prevent disputes.
- Excellent judgment, analytical rigor, clear communication, and business pragmatism.
- Ability to understand and resolve complex legal and business issues.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with Salesforce and CounselLink preferred.
