The Legal team is responsible for managing the legal affairs of the company, including providing legal counsel across the organization, handling disputes, and creating and enforcing intellectual property.

The primary role of Senior Legal Counsel – Product is to advise and partner with ResMed’s Product teams on all ongoing activities related to the organization’s legal affairs with a specific focus on the North Americas region. Key deliverables include, providing legal strategy and advice on a broad range of corporate matters including: consumer and competition law, technology transfer, global privacy law and regulations, advertising, healthcare and medical device regulations.

Essential duties include proactive legal guidance to support the creation and launch of new and innovative sleep and respiratory care products, digital products, ecosystems and service models while ensuring that laws affecting medical device manufacturers and digital health are properly addressed. The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively with ResMed’s global product team members and across the global legal team. Internal ResMed clients will be located both inside and outside the United States, you will support and coordinate with global clients to further ResMed’s business and legal interests in these important areas. Importantly you will develop a deep understanding of the ResMed global product business and strategy partnering on all levels from strategy to execution.

Let’s Talk about Responsibilities:

  • Advice to our product teams on complex legal issues impacting medical technology providers and medical device operating within the healthcare industry particularly with respect to the development and offering of novel products and digital for ResMed providers and their patients.
  • Interact with all levels of management and/or major customers and strategic collaborators. Interactions frequently involving special skills, such as explaining, advising and influencing senior level leaders, particularly with respect to legal issues associated with developing and launching new products and digital technology offerings in complex markets, advertising and marketing, sales and contracting.
  • Identify and navigate solutions to potential issues that implicate compliance with anti-kickback, privacy and other relevant laws.
  • Work closely with and support leaders in the global product teams, privacy, intellectual proparty, and the rest of the global legal team to ensure alignment of legal, commercial, compliance, and regulatory goals as we identify the need for, develop, and launch our healthcare offerings to providers and patients.
  • Use systems thinking to coordinate activities with global counterparts to deliver repeatable and predictable legal advice to product managers, other global commercial lawyers, and global commercial offerings.
  • Supervise outside counsel on issues and projects outsourced by the legal department, as needed.
  • Support the Product teams as we integrate digital products into our offerings to customers and patients. Provide ancillary support outside the North America region.
  • Additional responsibilities require knowledge of general corporate matters, corporate governance, licensing technology, medical device regulations and general healthcare laws and regulations.

Let’s talk about Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, law degree from accredited law school, eligible for California in-house registration.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in medical device, product, or technology related businesses
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, CCPA, CPRA, PIPEDA, LGPD, the GDPR and other privacy laws preferred but not essential.
  • Looks beyond existing methodologies and own discipline to define and resolve complex problems by thinking practically, has in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives. Constantly leaning in to learn new areas that impact our business, our customers and their patients.
  • Demonstrated versatility, curious to tackle and learn matters outside of expertise, and sound judgment.
  • Sound cross-functional collaboration, ability to strategically prioritize, keep up with a fast-paced entrepreneurial type of environment. You must be able to deal with ambiguity, and seek out opportunities to contribute across our productlegal and privacy teams.
  • California resident preferred, will consider remote location for the right candidate.
  • Experience working on global projects or across cultures a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Business-savvy, creative approach to problem solving.
