The Global R&D Data and Privacy Counsel serves as the primary legal support for the corporate and OU Research organizations with respect to data and privacy issues.This role is a key legal resource and strategic partner for R&D and a resource for colleagues directly supporting Medtronic’s Operating Units (OU) and Functions and other teams in the Data & Privacy COE, OU customers, as well as partner functions such as Intellectual Property, Regulatory, Clinical and Contracting COE. The R&D counsel may also lead enterprise negotiations with key novel business arrangements with customers, non-traditional commercial partners, and other entities.

This position can reside in Fridley, MN or one of our CA locations (Santa Rosa, Northridge or Irvine) and will work per the hybrid guidelines.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Providing expert advice on secondary use of heath data under global privacy laws (HIPAA and GDPR in particular).
  • Supporting global digital health initiatives and novel innovations.
  • Counseling for R&D community regarding data use and access.
  • Advising on AI-related data and privacy issues
  • Promoting and supporting Privacy by Design resources and processes to assist in integration into OU and corporate R&D processes.
  • Supporting advocacy efforts relating to AI, data use, data transfers, and other global regulatory developments for legislation that may impact Medtronic technologies.
  • Serving as a primary contact point for the R&D counsel, including providing training, communicating priorities, and connecting relevant team members within the global Data and Privacy organization
  • Serving as a R&D business partner expert, to support and facilitate creating of impactful training, processes, and client service from the global COE.
  • Serving as a point of contact to support Medtronic’s Global Technology and Innovation Team.
  • Providing expert advice on deal matters and general business matters. This may involve new business and product development, material changes to existing products, third party partnerships and data acquisitions, and business consultation requests.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects to advise on privacy, AI and data enablement.
  • Working as a team member building consensus on cutting-edge legal issues, including interpreting and providing guidance on legal and regulatory requirements and developments regarding privacy, AI, data enablement and use impacting Medtronic businesses.
  • Collaborating with the Global Data & Privacy Program team in providing guidance to functional and business leads for implementation of identified requirements.
  • Serving as an active member of the Data and Privacy leadership team, contributing to all strategic decisions.
  • Providing legal advice, counsel and service to internal business clients concerning legal rights, obligations, and privileges.
  • Keeps current on legislative issues, statutes, decisions and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies, with a particular focus on emerging AI and data localization efforts.
  • May develop, review, or implement company-wide and/or functionally specific training programs.
  • May work with outside counsel to direct activities.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from nationally recognized law school
  • Admitted to one or more state bars
  • 8+ years of legal experience

Nice to Have

  • Medical industry experience (device, phrama, bio)
  • Expertise on secondary use of health data for R&D under global privacy laws/
  • Broad business unit/operating unit legal experience
  • Strong working knowledge in diverse legal fields, including privacy and complex agreements

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
