The Legal Department provides core legal support to all Dolby functions, runs several IP-centric businesses, and leads government relations.

Summary

The successful candidate will be a patent attorney or agent responsible for supporting active research, development, and licensing programs related to Dolby video technologies. This role includes a variety of responsibilities, such as managing patent prosecution, analyzing third-party patents and standards documents, capturing invention disclosures, and conducting due diligence on potential acquisitions. As part of Dolby’s video patent group, you will oversee the prosecution of a global portfolio of patents and patent applications related to video and digital cinema technologies.

Responsibilities

 

  • Align a growing, worldwide patent portfolio with business priorities, including reviewing invention disclosures and preparing recommendations for the invention review committee.
  • Manage domestic and international outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications critical to Dolby’s business.
  • Advise on the acquisition, development, and commercialization of third-party technologies and related intellectual property matters.
  • Assess third-party patent claims related to products and technologies.
  • Support patent licensing and enforcement activities.
  • Provide information and training to internal teams as needed regarding patent protection procedures and programs.
  • Perform other patent, licensing, and intellectual property-related tasks as assigned.

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field
  • Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • 2+ years of experience as a patent attorney in a law firm or corporate setting
  • Strong initiative and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field
  • Expertise in video signal processing, digital image processing, virtual reality, augmented reality, and/or optics
  • In-house experience as a patent attorney
  • Experience in intellectual property licensing and litigation
  • Familiarity with standards bodies and patent pools
  • Experience managing global patent strategies

The San Francisco/Bay Area base salary range for this full-time position is $184,000 - 253,000, which can vary if outside this location, plus bonus, benefits, and some roles may also include equity. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
