Harmon, Curran, Spielberg & Eisenberg, LLP, a small, collegial, values-oriented law firm in Washington, DC that serves the progressive nonprofit public interest community, is seeking a senior attorney to join our firm’s employment law practice.
The selected candidate will have the option to work on a hybrid or remote basis out of our downtown DC office; the candidate for this position must be located in the DC area or willing to relocate.
The senior attorney in this position will provide employment related advice and counseling to the firm’s nonprofit organizational clients that work to advance civil rights, environmental protection, immigrant rights, democracy, accountability, and other social and economic justice issues. The attorney will primarily provide legal representation on employment law matters, including advising clients about their legal obligations, helping clients consider and craft strategies for handling complicated employee matters, drafting employment related materials, and reviewing personnel policies and handbooks. From time to time, the senior attorney may also provide legal advice in other areas of nonprofit organization operations, such as structural and governance issues, contractual relationships, non-discrimination obligations in program operations, services, and contracts, program spin-offs, and member codes of conduct and complaints. We are interested in experienced candidates who share our public interest orientation, want an advice-based practice helping clients understand and navigate the law in a way that reflects and furthers their values, and would like to continue growing the firm with us. Because the individual in this position will assist our existing clients, applicants do not need to bring a portable book of business. We are open to flexible work arrangements and have reasonable billable hour requirements.
Harmon Curran is an Equal Opportunity Employer that values and welcomes diversity in the workplace and strongly encourages all qualified persons to apply, including people of color, women, and individuals with disabilities.
Job Requirements
We are seeking a senior candidate with seven or more years of employment and/or labor law experience, that preferably includes experience providing counseling and advice. Qualified candidates should have experience with a broad range of employment law topics, such as anti-discrimination and anti-harassment law, wage and hour law, family and medical leave and sick and safe leave laws, obligations under express and implied employment contracts, and best practices for handling discipline and separations. Expertise in employee benefits or labor law, while not required, is desirable. Experience with nonprofit organizations and their operational issues is also not required but a plus.
Qualified candidates will be motivated self-starters with strong academic credentials, excellent writing and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to handle complicated matters with minimal supervision. They should be able to make judgment calls, assess available strategies and options, and provide feedback and guidance. Candidates should also have strong attention to detail, be comfortable managing multiple and varied client requests, and be able to quickly digest and provide advice regarding new state and federal laws. Candidates must be a member of or eligible for admission to the DC Bar.
