Primary Purpose Of Position

Exelon seeks an experienced environmental attorney to join our team. The Assistant General Counsel – Environmental will provide legal advice and representation to the Company’s business units on the full range of environmental matters, including permitting and compliance, contaminated site assessment and remediation, litigation, support of real estate and other transactions, and regulatory and legislative policy analysis and advocacy. This attorney will interface with Company management and teams at all levels and represent the Company externally, and must be able to work under minimal supervision on matters of significant importance.

Primary Duties And Accountabilities

  • Performs as a specialist in environmental law, providing legal counsel to Exelon Business Units on the full range of environmental matters, including permitting and compliance, contaminated site assessment and remediation, litigation, support of real estate and other transactions, and regulatory and legislative policy analysis and advocacy.
  • Under minimal supervision, plans, conducts and supervises complex legal assignments, requiring an ability to evaluate matters that may have a major bearing on conducting the Company’s business; evaluates legal and business risks and advises clients accordingly.
  • Oversees outside counsel and prepares, and revises as necessary, budgets and early matter assessments for all matters involving outside counsel.
  • Other projects / duties as assigned

  • Manages relationships and matters with Business Units and outside counsel.
  • Demonstrates superior legal judgment in the business context.
  • Anticipates and understands trends in relevant areas of law and policy; and provides strategic thinking and counsel to meet company objectives.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • An LLB or JD from an accredited law school.
  • At least 7 to 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney in the area of environmental law.
  • Possesses and applies a comprehensive knowledge of substance, principles, practices and procedures of environmental law to complex assignments.
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional and diverse teams and on time-sensitive and high-risk matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as in-house counsel or working with in-house counsel at one or more large companies.
  • Experience working with and/or in an environmental regulatory agency, at the federal or state level.
  • Experience in the electric power and/or natural gas delivery industries.
