Position Summary:

The Senior Director, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Sustainability will lead a Center of Excellence supporting three groups, Life Sciences Solutions Group, Lab Products Group, and the BioProduction Group. This leader will develop and implement a comprehensive, zero-harm based management system and culture, focused on continuous improvement across the groups. This individual will be an internal consultant, leading a team of subject-matter experts who will collectively drive the EHS vision and strategy across the network.

This individual is a constant learner, staying ahead of industry trends, and seizes opportunities for growth. They are an impactful communicator who is effective at collaborating through formal / informal channels to accomplish meaningful and timely results and drives creative solutions to complex problems. This role requires an individual who will serve as a trusted advisor that defines key business objectives, maps out strategic program elements, and consistently delivers on commitments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and sustain a strong EHS culture through the implementation of standardized EHS policies, procedures, and training across manufacturing operations; robust EHS Management System (EHS-MS), outstanding communication, and meaningful employee engagement. Establish and share successful solutions with the larger organization, globally.
  • Develop and lead a team of EHS professionals, including day to day supervision, goal setting, budget oversight, performance management, coaching and mentoring.
  • Create a functional talent strategy for the Groups and develop a collaborative culture that supports cross-functional partnership to deliver against operational goals.
  • Provide strategic leadership, technical expertise, and support for all EHS, loss prevention, product compliance, sustainability and business continuity initiatives driving compliance and continuous improvement across the network.
  • Ensure oversight for the management of existing environmental liabilities and participate in new acquisition/divestiture due diligence as needed.
  • Ensure EHS management review process at the group level to ensure business leadership remains up to date and involved in decision making regarding the effectiveness of the EHS-MS, including but not limited to new and emerging legislation, performance against goals, significant and potentially significant injuries and fatalities, adequacy of resources, opportunities for continuous improvement and changes in environmental aspects, hazards, risk and opportunities.
  • Actively monitor and communicate performance against goals / objectives through narratives and business reviews. Identify improvements and scale opportunities for growth.
  • Remain up to date on new and emerging legislation in EHS and its impact on the operating businesses within the network. Participate in industry groups and forums as necessary to stay informed.
  • Drive practical process improvement. Providing thought leadership and inspiring change at all levels in the organization with intensity and integrity. Remove barriers through effective problem solving and coordination with internal partners.
  • Develop relationships with leaders across the organization and within the EHS, Corporate Risk Management, and Corporate Social Responsibility functions. Ensure continued, productive partnerships between group, division, corporate, and site-level operations.
  • Participate as a member of the company’s EHS leadership team working with other group and corporate leaders to drive alignment across the global function, support talent development and ensure the successful implementation of the organization’s EHS strategy.

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in an EHS discipline or other related field (i.e. engineering, biology, chemistry).
  • Minimum 15 years of continuous leadership experience as an EHS professional with experience leading and mentoring others. Experience leading and working with teams globally.
  • Proficiency in EHS leadership / program management within a global, highly matrixed environment.
  • Strong industry knowledge of EHS standards, requirements, and the associated regulatory environment, including previous experience working with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable global regulations.
  • Strong communicator and collaborative partner with internal operations, corporate functions, business leadership, legal counsel, and regulators.
  • Strong business sense and ability to influence others.
  • Experience using EHS databases, PowerBI or similar tools to measure performance and identify trends.
  • Excellent organizational, judgment, analytical, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to travel 30-50%.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s Degree and/or professional certification strongly recommended (CSP, CIH, CHMM, etc.).
  • Six Sigma / Lean Experience a plus.
  • Experience developing/implementing EHS management systems and working with ISO14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Experience leading others including managers of others.
  • Ability to lead multiple sophisticated projects in parallel while balancing constantly evolving priorities.

Compensation And Benefits

In addition to a competitive base salary, this position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. Compensation And Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $192,700.00–$256,900.00.
