The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team providing legal counsel and support to Avangrid Networks’ utility subsidiaries in Connecticut and/or Massachusetts utilizing global best practices. This position will provide legal support and represent the Company principally on electric and gas utility regulatory matters, including before the Connecticut and Massachusetts state regulatory commissions, and the Connecticut Siting Council, as well as supporting other areas of the Company’s utility businesses in Connecticut and/or Massachusetts.

This position reports to the UIL Holdings Corporation General Counsel, the parent company to The United Illuminating Company, Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Berkshire Natural Gas and is located in Orange, Connecticut. There are no direct reports to this position.

Major Roles And Responsibilities

  • Provide legal leadership and counsel on state regulatory proceedings and compliance filings, including drafting or review of filings and representing electric and gas utility companies (The United Illuminating Company, Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and Berkshire Natural Gas) in proceedings before state regulatory agencies in Connecticut and/or Massachusetts, including but not limited to the Connecticut Public Utility Regulatory Authority
  • Assist with and provide legal advice in rate cases for The United Illuminating Company, Southern Connecticut Gas, Connecticut Natural Gas, and/or Berkshire Natural Gas
  • Monitor and support regulatory dockets, review compliance filings, draft protective orders, appear at hearing and technical conferences at state regulatory agencies in Connecticut and/or Massachusetts
  • Advise senior managers within the Company on topics of concern to the electric and gas utility businesses
  • Work alongside and become a trusted advisor to the business areas within the Company
  • Assist outside counsel in the Company’s defense of suits or claims and the preparation of the prosecution of the corporation’s claims against others
  • Prepare or review contracts, purchase agreements, leases and other legal instruments to safeguard the Company’s interests
  • Perform research and prepare and draft necessary legal documents and correspondence; Monitor relevant regulatory proceedings
  • Analyze and organize documentary evidence and develop conclusions and make recommendations to business areas
  • Gather information for annual reporting on sustainability, litigation, penalties, regulatory dockets, etc.
  • Support the United Illuminating General Counsel and other members of the legal team

Skills/Abilities

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing to all levels of the organization Ability to work at a fast pace and under deadlines Strong negotiating skills with both legal and commercial issues Ability to research key legal issues for the Companies and convey results in an effective, understandable manner Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization's legal and regulatory departments, across all businesses, and with regulatory agencies Ability to work independently with little or no supervision

Experience/Training

Experience as an attorney with a law firm or in-house position preferred with at least three (3) years of practical legal experience preferably as gas and/or electric regulatory counsel, and other areas such as litigation, environmental, safety or administrative law preferably with experience in Connecticut and/or Massachusetts state utility regulatory matters.

Bar Admission/Certifications : Admitted to practice in Connecticut or Massachusetts or able to waive in, or otherwise gain admission to the Bars of Connecticut and/or Massachusetts.

Required Education : J.D. degree
