Susman Godfrey Pioneering a New Standard in Associate Compensation

Susman Godfrey Pioneering a New Standard in Associate Compensation

In a move sending ripples through the legal industry, Susman Godfrey, a leading litigation boutique, has shattered the traditional market bonus scale. The firm has announced year-end bonuses that significantly outstrip those offered by the largest law firms in the nation. This decision underscores the firm’s commitment to acknowledging the substantial contributions of its associates and sets a new benchmark in associate compensation.

Susman Godfrey’s year-end bonuses range from $140,000 to a staggering $350,000, amounts that triple the BigLaw scale at the upper levels. This is a clear departure from the industry norm and a testament to the firm’s recognition of the value its associates bring. The median bonus for each class of associates at Susman Godfrey ranges from $115,000 to $215,000, far exceeding BigLaw even when including the special COVID bonuses many large firms gave out this year.

The median 2022 bonus for each partnership class at Susman Godfrey is as follows:

  • 2022: $170,000

  • 2023: $155,000

  • 2024: $140,000

  • 2025: $135,000

  • 2026: $115,000

  • 2027: $90,000

Associates who have put in particularly high hours have been rewarded with increased bonus amounts. It’s worth noting that Susman Godfrey awards year-end bonuses based on partnership class rather than graduation year from law school, a unique approach that further distinguishes the firm.

Expanding the Partnership and Recognizing Talent

In addition to the market-leading bonuses, Susman Godfrey has elected all seven associates in its 2022 partnership class to partner. The seven new partners hail from each of the firm’s four offices and, like all Susman Godfrey associates, have completed one or more federal clerkships. They will join Susman Godfrey’s equity-only partnership as full equity partners, a testament to the firm’s commitment to nurturing and promoting talent.

“We are in a truly extraordinary moment in the 40-plus year history of the firm, with our highest-ever revenue and a record number of cases tried over the last year and a half,” said the firm’s managing partners Vineet Bhatia and Kalpana Srinivasan in a statement.

A Celebration of Success Across the Firm

Susman Godfrey’s philosophy of sharing in its success with everyone who contributes to it is evident in its decision to provide year-end bonuses for every single one of its other 173 employees. This includes 131 non-attorney employees, demonstrating the firm’s recognition of the value of all its staff members.

Srinivasan and Bhatia expressed their delight at being able to reward their exceptional associates for their hard work and critical contributions to the firm’s success.

Setting a New Benchmark in the Legal Industry

Susman Godfrey’s decision to smash the market bonus scale and pay senior associates more than triple the standard is a bold and commendable move. It not only recognizes the significant contributions of its associates but also sets a new benchmark in the legal industry. This could potentially usher in a new era of associate compensation and set a precedent for other firms to follow. It will be interesting to see how this move influences the broader legal industry in the years to come.
