The Opportunity
This position works out of our Willis Tower location in Chicago, Illinois, or our Abbott Park location in Abbott Park, Illinois. Remote work is not in scope for this position.
Abbott is seeking an experienced trademark paralegal to join our global trademark team and be part of an innovative group dedicated to elevating trademark practice to best align with Abbott’s cutting-edge diverse businesses that bring life-changing technology to people all over the world. The candidate will work closely with Abbott businesses to create and execute on brand strategies and will work around the world to protect Abbott trademarks from infringement.
What You’ll Work On
- Conduct foreign and domestic trademark clearance searches to determine availability of trademarks, including on-line searching and working with foreign agents
- Collaborate with marketing colleagues and trademark attorneys to develop brand strategies
- Create summary reports and draft clearance opinions on a global basis
- Manage process and workflow of worldwide trademark filings, prosecution, renewals and conflicts (oppositions, cancellations, infringements)
- Act as the first line of communication for trademark prosecution, escalating matters to the managing attorney as well as relaying his/her instructions to outside counsel
- Managing trademark disputes through coordination with managing attorney and outside counsel
- Docket management for critical deadlines and status updates
- Review invoices and either approve for payment or reject to vendor with appropriate explanation
- Assist in trademark budget planning and cost management for specific business unit
- Assist in the monitoring of outside docketing system for correct docketing of all actions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and relevant legal education (Paralegal certificate), preferred.
- 5+ years of trademark paralegal experience
- Familiarity with docketing systems such as WebTMS or IP Manager
- Familiarity with third party trademark screening tools such as Corsearch or Clarivate
- Ability to handle a portfolio of 5000+ active trademarks
- Ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders
- Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail, sound judgment and solid organizational skills

The base pay for this position is $64,000.00 – $128,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
