Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Counsel to join our dynamic Legal team. The Senior Counsel, Privacy will play a crucial role in ensuring that the organization complies with global data privacy and protection laws, regulations, and best practices. This position will advise on data privacy issues related to the company’s products, services, business operations, and future initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Global Data Privacy Strategy: Assist in developing and leading the company’s global privacy and data protection strategy, ensuring alignment with business objectives while ensuring compliance with GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, and other privacy frameworks.

  • Legal Advisory: Provide expert legal advice to internal teams (e.g., product, engineering, HR, and marketing) on privacy and data governance matters, including disclosure obligations, data retention, cross-border data transfers, and incident response.

  • Data Governance Compliance: Collaborate with compliance, legal and security teams to implement and manage a robust data privacy and data governance compliance program, including policies, procedures, privacy impact assessments (PIAs), and data protection impact assessments (DPIAs).

  • Contract Review & Negotiation: Assist commercial legal team in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating data processing agreements (DPAs), vendor agreements, and privacy-related clauses in other commercial contracts.

  • Training & Awareness: Lead internal privacy awareness initiatives and provide training on data protection regulations and best practices to employees across the organization.

  • Incident Management: Support the company’s incident response team in investigating and managing data security incidents and breaches involving privacy, ensuring timely regulatory notifications and stakeholder communications.

  • Monitoring & Reporting: Stay informed about evolving global privacy regulations and industry best practices, and provide regular updates and reports to the leadership team on the company’s privacy posture.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as a liaison between the company and data protection authorities, external privacy consultants, and third-party vendors regarding data protection matters.

  • Policy Development: Oversee the drafting and implementation of privacy policies and internal guidelines.

  • Risk Mitigation: Identify and mitigate privacy-related risks, providing strategic advice to minimize potential liabilities.

 

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal degree from an accredited law school.

  • Active bar membership in good standing in at least one jurisdiction.

  • Minimum of 6-10 years of experience in privacy, data protection, or related areas, with significant experience advising on GDPR, CCPA, CPRA, U.S. state privacy laws, and global privacy regulations including in Asia.

  • Prior in-house experience preferred.

  • Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPP/M, or equivalent) preferred.

  • Expertise in drafting and negotiating privacy-related contracts and data processing agreements.

  • Strong understanding of technical concepts related to data security and IT infrastructure.

  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate complex privacy issues for non-legal stakeholders.

  • Proven track record of collaborating across departments and managing cross-functional projects.

  • Ability to balance legal risks with business objectives in a pragmatic and solutions-oriented manner.

  • Experience working in technology, SaaS, or a highly regulated industry preferred.

The compensation range reflects the Company’s good faith belief at the time of posting. 8x8 has different base pay ranges for different work locations within the United States, which allows us to pay employees competitively and consistently in different geographic markets. The range above reflects the potential base pay across the U.S. for this role; the applicable base pay range will depend on what ultimately is determined to be the candidate’s primary work location. Further, individual base pay depends on various factors, in addition to primary work location, such as complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience, knowledge, success, education and skills. Base pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the base pay range applicable at the time. Certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including discretionary merit increases, bonus and/or stock. Certain roles have the opportunity to earn sales variable compensation incentives based on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.

 

Salary Ranges:

$170,250.00 - $283,750.00
