Posted Feb 01 Big Y Foods has an excellent opportunity for a Corporate Counsel to join our company. The Corporate Counsel handles a variety of legal matters for the company including contracts, real estate, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, employment law and litigation. Duties include drafting, negotiating and interpreting contracts/documents, and assisting management in the negotiation of terms, minimizing risk and protecting the company’s interests; collaborating with business teams to standardize contract forms and increase efficiency of deal execution; ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations and ethical standards that affect business activities; working with outside counsel in connection with commercial/real estate matters, litigation and regulatory proceedings; and training/educating employees on regulatory and process matters. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this position works collaboratively with the Legal team and management throughout the organization.
Requirements:
- JD degree from an accredited law school;
- Current member of a state bar, preferably MA or CT
- At least 3 years’ experience at law firm or as in-house counsel.
- Ability to maintain high degree of ethics, integrity and confidentiality
- Team player with a positive attitude and businesslike conduct.
- Possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Independent worker and self-starter
- Ability to operate within company policies, procedures, and standards.
- Ability to interact and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks without supervision.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, ability to prioritize and follow-through.
- Possess analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must be willing to work at the company’s office in Springfield, MA.
Essential Functions:
- Review/negotiate/interpret documents and contracts with business vendors and partners; provide advice and counsel to management on risks/obligations/liabilities.
- Review/negotiate real estate agreements including leases, purchase and sale documents and ancillary documents; work with lease administration on property management issues.
- Provide advice and counsel to management on various business, employment, regulatory and privacy issues.
- Collaborate with business teams to improve forms and process.
- Train and educate employees on regulatory and process matters
- Provide litigation management and oversight
- Represent legal team on company committees and groups to minimize risk and ensure compliance
- Manage outside counsel relationships
