We’re looking for a skilled and motivated attorney with a passion and curiosity for technology to join the CELA Customer Experience & Policy legal team to serve as a  trusted advisor for the Experience & Devices engineering and business organization, specifically the Web Experiences team, which powers consumer-focused services like Microsoft Bing, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Start.  

This attorney role will include a broad and varied portfolio of legal work spanning multiple international jurisdictions, counseling on privacy, content moderation, digital safety, responsible AI, copyright, compliance, and transactional support for product engineering and business development teams together with work on ad hoc, important strategic projects and initiatives. Responsibilities

Legal Advice and Counsel

  • Drive deep engagement as “front-line” legal counsel
  • Provide high-quality, pragmatic legal and business advice regarding a wide range of general product development, privacy/data protection, compliance, content moderation, marketing, accessibility, consumer protection, and intellectual property issues
  • Provide regulatory and other compliance guidance for various technology, products, and services
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts with a technology focus

Solution Implementation

  • Identify, anticipate, and propose solutions for legal risks
  • Think strategically and help create and execute plans to achieve both short-term and long-term results and communicate with key legal and business stakeholders
  • Resolve project-specific issues by interacting with outside counsel or other service providers
  • Develop and implement processes, templates and best practices, track projects and share knowledge across the wider Microsoft legal community

Communication

  • Organize and simplify issues and ideas in written or verbal communication
  • Work collaboratively within and across CELA functions; identify and engage appropriate stakeholders in CELA and escalate issues when necessary

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree
  • Active license to practice law in a US jurisdiction
  • 5+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney or equivalent practice of law

  • Technology Industry Knowledge - Knowledge of trends, direction, new products, and changes in technology as it applies to a particular area of focus, as well as specific knowledge about hardware, software and services.
  • Creative Legal Thinking - The ability to develop and present creative arguments and opinions to support the organization, defend cases, or negotiate solutions.
  • Client Communications - The ability to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and effectively to an audience that may include, staff, investors, stockholders, stakeholders, clients, and others verbally and through announcements, newsletters, memos, annual reports, status reports, and other media.
  • Global Mindset - Knowledge and understanding of global cultures, including similarities and differences. This includes the ability to work across organizational, functional, and geographic boundaries to drive communications, business strategies and multi-geography projects and teams; and adapt to a highly matrixed environment.

The salary for this role in the state of Colorado is between $135,000 and $202,600.

At Microsoft, certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
