Big Media Legal Leaders See Record Pay

Leading legal counsel for media giants earned on average between $5M - $11M last year, amid expanding responsibilities in a fast-changing environment facing copyright, antitrust, compliance challenges.

Big Media Legal Leaders See Record Pay

Corporate legal departments are gaining increasing importance and top legal executives at major media companies are seeing record compensation packages to reflect this change. A recent report from Bloomberg Law reveals Netflix and Disney are leading the way, with their Chief Legal Officers (CLOs) receiving some of the highest pay in the industry.

Top Earners in Media Law

According to the report, Netflix's Chief Legal Officer David Hyman topped the list with an impressive total compensation of $13.7M in 2023. Hyman's package includes a base salary of $4M, substantial stock options, and various performance-related bonuses. Hyman's compensation reflects Netflix's aggressive global expansion and its continuous need to navigate a myriad of regulatory challenges across different markets.

Close behind is Disney's General Counsel Horacio Gutierrez, who earned nearly $11.7M. Gutierrez's compensation package also combines a significant base salary with stock awards and bonuses. His high compensation is attributed to Disney's diverse portfolio, including its streaming services, theme parks, and entertainment properties, all of which require vigilant legal oversight.

The substantial pay packages for these legal chiefs are a mix of base salaries, stock options, and performance bonuses. This structure aligns with broader corporate trends that emphasize aligning executives' interests with company performance and shareholder value.

Industry Averages and Trends

While Hyman and Gutierrez represent the pinnacle of legal executive compensation in the media industry, they are part of a broader trend of rising pay for Chief Legal Officers. On average, CLOs at major media companies earn between $5M and $10M annually. This figure encompasses base salaries, stock options, and bonuses, and varies depending on the size and complexity of the company.

For instance, the report highlights that CLOs at companies like Comcast, Fox Corp, and Liberty Global also enjoy substantial compensation packages, typically in the $5M to $11M range.

The remaining top 10 earners in media law (according to the Bloomberg report):

3. Comcast’s Thomas Reid - $11.2M

4. Fox Corp.’s Viet Dinh - $10.7M, stepped down at the end of 2023 following a $787M defamation settlement

5. Liberty Media Corp.’s Renee Wilm - $7.9M and an additional $4.9M from four other related entities

6. Liberty Global Ltd.’s Bryan Hall - $9.3M

7. Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.’s Daniel Emerson - $8.1M

8. Endeavor Group Holdings Inc.’s Seth Krauss - $6.3M

9. Altice USA Inc.’s Michael Olsen - $6.3M

10. Paramount Global’s Christa D’Alimonte - $5.8M, left at the end of June with a $6.5M severance package

The Bloomberg Law ranking only included law chiefs at companies in the entertainment, telecommunications and mass media fields, excluding social media, tech and gaming giants.

The Role of Legal Chiefs in Big Media

The high compensation for media law chiefs reflects the critical role they play in their organizations. As the media landscape undergoes rapid transformation, driven by digital innovation, globalization, and shifting consumer preferences, the legal challenges have become increasingly complex.

For example, streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ must navigate a labyrinth of international regulations and content licensing agreements while also managing privacy concerns and intellectual property rights. Legal chiefs are pivotal in guiding their companies through these challenges, ensuring compliance, and mitigating legal risks.

Furthermore, the rise of digital platforms has led to increased scrutiny from regulators, making the role of the CLO even more crucial. Issues such as data privacy, copyright issues, antitrust regulations, and content moderation are at the forefront of legal departments' agendas. The need for robust legal strategies to address these issues is reflected in the generous compensation packages awarded to top legal executives.

“It’s all about the three C’s—cash, cachet, and complexity of legal work,” said Lee Udelsman, a veteran in-house legal recruiter and managing partner at Major, Lindsey & Africa. “We live in a digital world where content is available to the consumer 24 hours a day. Whether it’s Disney or Netflix, these companies are at the center of the action.”

As the media sector continues to evolve, driven by digital transformation and regulatory challenges, the role of the CLO will only become more significant. Their expertise in managing legal risks and ensuring compliance is crucial to the success of their companies, justifying the substantial compensation packages they receive.
